Today Irisbond, along with B&J Adaptaciones, received the Queen Sofia Award for Assistive Technology in the Patio de los Borbones of the Royal Palace of El Pardo. The award was presented by Her Majesty the Queen Letizia and Her Majesty the Queen Sofia. Also in attendance was the Minister of Health, Alfonso Alonso, Secretary General of the Royal Board on Disability, Susana Camarero, and the President of the Royal Board on Disability and President of the Jury, Ignacio Tremiño.

The Queen Sofia Awards are organized by the Royal Board on Disability. This year, the National Center for Assistive Technology (CENTAC) joined forces with the Royal Board on Disability to convene a new prize category: Assistive Technology.

In an official statement from the adjudicators, Irisbond won the award “for the ‘Miradas que hablan’ (My Eyes Speak) project, and its innovative and entrepreneurial nature in the field of technology and accessibility. Irisbond provides a communication aid for people suffering from severe physical impairment, a system based on eye movement and artificial vision technologies that allow users to control a computer with their eyes. The company has been commercializing the eye tracker mainly in Latin America and Europe. Irisbond’s eye tracker opens a channel of communication for people suffering from ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), cerebral palsy and other conditions.”

B&J Adaptaciones, on the other hand, was awarded the prize for its long track record in fighting for individuals’ autonomy by being a distributor of nearly 1,000 different assistive technology products.

“This award is a great inspiration to continue working for people with disabilities,” said Eduardo Jauregui, Irisbond CEO and co-founder, at the awards ceremony. “Working on technological developments that improve the quality of life of people with severe conditions, in this case ALS, paralysis or brain damage, is extremely rewarding.” He concluded: “We’ve improved a lot, but there’s still a lot of work to do. For us this has never been about philanthropy, this has always been about making things fair.”

Irisbond was born in San Sebastián, Spain, in July 2013 with the technological support of Vicomtech-IK4, a reference in the world of computer graphics and visual computing research. The Irisbond Primma eye tracker, a device which allows users to control a computer by moving their eyes, was introduced to the market in October 2013. In addition to assistive technology, the technology also has various applications in industrial processes, healthcare and other sectors where professionals are busy working with their hands and/or their hands need to remain sanitized.

Last year Irisbond also won the Toribio Echevarría prize in both the “Technological” and the “Supporting Internationalisation” categories, and was the Basque Country regional winner of the EmprendedorXXI award “Social Impact”, and was a runner-up in the “Social Impact” category in the national finals. In 2015 it won the Reto Ability (Ability Challenge), which is a new category in the Telefonica Ability Awards that rewards technological innovation which promotes the inclusion of people with a disability in society.
